About YME
Young Malaysian Engineers (UK) is a student organisation that aims to represent and develop Malaysian engineering students in the UK. In line with the aims of the organisation, YME-UK hopes to bridge the gap of opportunities between Malaysian Engineering students in the UK and companies back in Malaysia. We also aim to develop different soft skills for engineering students via networking sessions and workshops held by YME-UK in collaboration with companies. Besides that, we hope to eradicate the silo mentality that engineers have a tendency to be binded to by promoting environmental and social movements. Hence, we have dedicated a team of individuals spearheading events such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the Summer Outreach Programmes in order to promote ethical engineering and interest in STEM amongst high school and college students.
The raison d'ĂȘtre of YME is the lack of representation of engineering students who are studying in the UK. We believe that it is high time engineering students are represented by a body that embodies proactivity and drive to open up opportunities to engineering students studying in the UK. Besides that, the presence of YME allows corporate sponsors who wish to have access of students with technical background to do so without having to go through the hassle of having to reach out to Malaysian Societies. This mutualistic relationship provides students with a platform to network with leaders of the industry and engineering firms.
Given our mammoth effort in promoting YME in the UK and as our footprint grows, we aim to empower Malaysian youths to play a larger role in STEM and promote the growth of STEM in Malaysia. MSTC was the beginning of our efforts in doing so. This year, we have refreshing new ideas with regards to events that encompass STEM and sustainability for instance Pecha-Kucha, Networking sessions for sponsors and partners, Summer Outreach Programme (SOP) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Another aspect we found lacking amongst Malaysian engineers is intellectual discourse, hence the idea of YME-Insider was brought to life. YME-Insider is our online platform where readers have access to weekly discussions on substantial issues such as green technology and the prospective use of nuclear energy. YME runs event for self development of engineering students and aims to promote horizontal learning by providing a platform for intellectual discourse. Through this, the one track mind of most engineering students can be overcome and they would be able to develop soft skills that most companies seek when it comes to acquiring talent.
